JSE First Annual Science Night a Big Success!
Students and community members were immersed in science during James Simons Elementary School's first annual Science Night Thursday, January 21st. The Citadel, MUSC's Junior Doctors of Health, Circular Congregational Church, The SC Department of Natural Resources and other organizations provided demonstrations, interaction with living creatures and other activities to get students and families excited about science. The event was a big success and the school is looking forward to its 2nd Annual Science Night next year.

Congratulations Ms. Washburn, WEZL's December Teacher of the Month. Ms. Washburn's sixth-grade class is being treated to lunch from McDonald's and she is receiving a special gift also! Great job Ms. Washburn. Check out more about WEZL's teacher of the month at http://www.wezl.com/pages/teacher.html?feed=295737&article=4192397

Cocky's Reading Express visits James Simons Students
Four University of South Carolina students and USC's mascot, Cocky, visited JSE students in the Media Center Wednesday, January 6th. The USC students read stories to CD through 3rd grade classes and told students how important reading was to them in school now and in their future jobs.
Students enjoyed hearing the stories, especially when Cocky helped act them out.

Christmas Around the World Studies
Students studied Christmas and other holidays in different continents with each grade level being assigned a continent. Fifth graders studied Chinese New Year, created paper dragons and displayed them outside their classroom. Ms. Riddy, Ms. Adkins and Ms. Lesemann worked with students to conduct research about Chinese inventions and write about those inventions. These fifth grade classes won a school-wide competition for their door decorations.

Students learned to eat with chop sticks and enjoyed fried rice prepared by Ms. Lesemann and Ms. Brown.

Helping The Puppies!
To learn more about writing and creating, fifth-grade students in Ms. McMullan's class at James Simons Elementary School created fabric dog toys with nationally-known crafter and published author Vivian Perritts (and former Charleston County schools student). The dog toys are being donated to a local dog shelter.

Reading at JSE

Reading and Riding at JSE
First-grader Timorai was the school's lucky winner of a bicycle in the pre-holiday PTA meeting. Timorai is in Ms. Wilson's class and has read over 50 books on her own! The bicycle was donated to James Simons Elementary School's Media Center by Easy Rider Bikes in Mount Pleasant. Timorai is a great reader like many first-graders here!

These two second-graders won some special books in a prize drawing at the December 17th PTA meeting. These books and many more were donated to James Simons through the James Simons Literacy Project. Every student in the school was able to take a book home over the winter break so they could ALWAYS have something to read.

Students and parents were able to see Clifford the Big Red Dog at JSE's Scholastic Book Fair in the Media Center. Students were excited about buying their own books and about seeing Clifford in their school.

Students Read for the Record
Over 240 JSE students read Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar Thursday, October 8th as part of Read for the Record Day. They and students all over Charleston county and the country were trying to break the World's Record for the most people reading the same book on the same day. Students participated in storytime in the media center with Principal Owings reading to several groups. They also created butterfly crafts with the help of sixth grade students and volunteers from Trident Technical College. It was a great day for reading at James Simons Elementary.

Fantastic Teachers

Mrs. Taylor who teaches 3rd grade was elected by her fellow faculty-members to be James Simons Elementary's Teacher of the Year.

McTeacher's Night October 22nd
